InfoBill Meyer, who counted himself lucky to be a friend of the late and much missed Jim Hawes, wants to make it clear that it is he who has named this plant. Jim himself would be mortified if people thought he named a hosta after himself, so we want to make that clear. The hosta 'Jim Hawes' is a highly attractive bright gold pycnophylla seedling that Jim himself raised, and was very fond of. He didn't get around to naming it before his passing, but Bill has named it in his memory because Jim liked it so much that it seemed the perfect choice. Jim was never one to sell a plant, much like Herb Benedict, though he gave many away to friends. Because of this, we ask that no one propagate this plant for sale, but rather share it freely in Jim's memory.
'Jim Hawes' is apparently of pure pycnophylla heritage, grown and selected by Jim from seed he received from Japan. The color is a bright slightly chartreuse yellow after emergence, slowly fading towards chartreuse as the season wears on. It remains a limey chartreuse through the latter part of the season and never darkens to green. The flowers are an attractive striped bluish purple and it has been shy about setting seed. The plant is tough, and the growth slow but regular.
Hosta 'Jim Hawes' is a medium-sized gold pycnophylla plant with the typical white backs and red petioles of the species. Leaves can reach 6"x9" and the plant about 24"Hx20"W. It is a bright yellow in spring fading slowly through the summer but never becoming green. It hasn't been observed to set seed yet, but does produce good pollen. Mark Zilis of Hostapedia fame remarked that it was "really a beautiful plant".
