Info | =tortifrons 'Koryu'. ='Kouryu'. ='Fused Veins'? Variegation is in relief and looks like Ryu, "dragon on the leaves". Coveted in Japan for its peculiar look. Discovered by Dr. Shuichi Hirao, it is also called H. 'Miyakodori'. In North America this cultivar name is also used incorrectly for H. sieboldii seedlings. This very distinctive collector's plant, a H. longipes (selection or hybrid) which is highly coveted in Japan, was originally discovered by Dr. Shuichi Hirao. This is the same plant that Dr. Benedict named H. 'Fused Veins', after not being able to determine the true identity. "Koryu" means "swollen variegation", which is evident when you look at the clump and notice that each narrow pointed leaf seems to be bordered with a darker green stitched edge. The small 1' wide clumper is topped in late summer with 1' tall scapes of dark lavender flowers. A new Japanese cultivar of the familiar twisted variety, with leaves with a number of different patterns of variegation. The leaves can be striped or centrally variegated with gray, yellow or white. Purple flowers very late in the season. |
