Info | =sieboldiana 'Glaucans Gold Edge' = sieboldiana 'Aurea Marginata' A hosta with a legendary status! It's history was described by Chet Tompkins in the AHS Bulletin of 1984, pages 8-13. In 1924 Chet's father brought it back from England (together with the 'English Sieboldiana' ), were it came from a botanical garden. It was labeled "SEIBOLDIANA GLAUCANS Golden Edged". It was used in many of the C. & C. Tompkins hybrids. Intriguing is that this is another gold bordered sieboldiana from long before 'Frances Williams' came along (1936)! From a distance 'Old Gold Edge' bears a resemblence to 'Frances Williams'. When the two are compared close-up, however, the differences are obvious. 'Old Gold Edge' is more of a medium sized cultivar and of a distinctly more compact, mounded nature. In early season, 'Old Gold Edge' has a very strong silvery patina. 'Old Gold Edge' takes much more sun than does 'Frances Williams'. Cynthia Tompkins used this hosta as one of the backbones of her hybridizing. A scarce, lovely piece of hosta history. |
