Info | ='Summer's Gift'. ='Summers Gift'. This may just be the perfect green plant. It is a seedling selected by Alex Summers, with excellent shiny leaves and attractive and profuse flowers. This is one of the very few hostas that still look really good in September. As you can see in the picture, this plant looks new and fresh even though Fall has arrived. It was given by Alex to Arthur Wrede a few years back, and is just too nice not to be shared. About medium size and very fertile. Of kikuti orgin, possibly mixed with longipes. Originally selected by the one and only Alex Summers, who deserves the title "Mr. Hosta" more than any other man, this plant was given to the fabled Arthur Wrede by Alex and named by Bill Meyer. It is truly something special, and a tremendous gift it was. This seldom offered plant, donated by Carol Brashear from her wonderful collection, maintains a quiet but tailored look through the summer. The leaves keep a nice but not overly shiny look in a good deep green color, and if it doesn't get too much sun, can look as fresh in September as they do in May. Come early Fall, the plant bursts into bloom with an exuberant cloud of flowers. One of the heaviest flowering hostas there are. Fertile too. Overall a great plant that should get around more than it does. The photo above is of Carol's plant taken about halfway through it's bloom period. |
